Litigation and the Court Process - Update

Following the introduction of the Civil Procedure Rules, the court system has been divided claims into three categories based upon value:

Small Claims - up to £5,000
Medium Claims - between £5,000 and £15,000
Large Claims - over £15,000

The three categories take slightly different routes (called "Tracks") to a final hearing. There are three tracks:

1. The Small Claims Track
2. The Fast Track
3. The Multi Track

From 6 April 2009, the financial limit of fast track claims has increased from £15,000 to £25,000.

Therefore, from 6 April 2009 onwards, the new arrangements for the allocation of cases will be as follows:

Small Claims - up to £5,000 (Small Claims Track)
Medium Claims - between £5,000 and £25,000 (Fast Track)
Large Claims - over £25,000 (Multi Track)
