Employment Law Update 3 - Flexible Working

From 6 April 2009, the right of a parent to request flexible working has been extended to parents of children up to the age of 16 years (i.e. under 17 years). The age limit extends to 17 years (i.e. under 18 years) for a disabled child.

This is only a right to request flexible working. The employer will be obliged to consider the request and there are still other criteria that need to be satisied, for example, having 26 weeks of continuous employment.

A request for flexible working can cover the hours worked, the times that an employee works and to work from a different location.
